![]() The action happens from a third-person perspective in an open-world environment. His childhood friend, Joe Barbaro, hooks him up with some work for a few crime families. An Italian-American World War II veteran, Vito returns to fictional Empire City (an amalgam of New York, Chicago, Detroit and Boston) to make a name for himself. In this installment, players assume the role of Vito Scaletta. Mafia II is the second in a trilogy of crime stories. Mafia II: DE checks none of these boxes and I’m honestly surprised that it was released in this state. Unfortunately, MII:DE fails to do what remasters should do - improve the original game in some way and update it for modern audiences, whether this be a bump in resolution, better framerate or having some glitches ironed out. It sounds like a hell of a deal, and ordinarily, would be an offer no one could refuse. Originally released in 2010, this port of 2K’s open-world action-adventure is titled the “definitive edition” and on the surface, it seems like it’s the total package boasting a cleaner visual style and three post-release DLC packs for $30 (or $60 as a part of a bundle with the other Mafia games). Hopefully these new editions of the Mafia games will give new gamers a good way to dig into the series, and will provide existing fans a compelling means to relive the hits and heists.I was originally going to open this review with some awful mafia-rleated jokes and puns, but I feel like I should cut to the chase here –the Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a broken game that feels dated and this re-release deserved to have a better coat of paint. ![]() Each of the three entries in the series has its own discrete narrative, so while players may be traveling back and forth from the ‘40s to the ‘60s to the ‘30s, it won’t be like watching The Godfather Part II before watching the original movie. The fact that the first game is coming out later shouldn’t be an issue for those playing through the series, though. (Steam users who already bought Mafia II or Mafia III will get a free upgrade to the newer versions.) A bundle of both games is available for $60 which also comes with a downloadable version of Mafia: Definitive Edition when it comes out in August.ĢK Games will rebuild Mafia: Definitive Edition from the ground up, so the 2002 title will have graphics, sound and features on par with current-gen games. The titles are available starting today on Steam, PS4 and Xbox One for $30 each. Mafia III: Definitive Edition, meanwhile, has the same graphics as the 2016 version of the game (which makes sense given how recent the game is) and also comes with all of the game’s DLC. Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a remaster of the 2010 game, so gamers can enjoy polished HD visuals, along with all of the game’s downloadable content. 2K Games also announced that August 28th will see the release of a full-on remake of the original Mafia game, as well as a physical compilation of all three games. After teasing an announcement last week (not to mention details and photos being leaked), the company has released “ Definitive Editions” of Mafia II and Mafia III. ![]() Fans of 2K Games’ Mafia series will have a lot of content to revisit over the next several months.
